This is a entertaining energetic movie about coming of age. That you can't believe a minute of. Sure if the world was a utopic society this film would fit right in but it's not. So this film is perfect wish fulfillment entertainment like a hodgepodge of various teen films and novels.
It tries to convince us our main character is wise beyond his years but in the end is still just a kid growing up who has a lot to learn and experiences to embrace.
The film is quirky all of the cast is excellent especially the newcomers. Kat dennings really gets a chance to sink her teeth into a bigger role and become the new face of being a geek godess as she is smart, Witty, beautiful yet you can believe might be into the same pursuits as you. She has a Sharp wit and a kind heart.
Intresting that Hope Davis plays Anton Yelchin's mother as she has before in the film HEARTS IN ATLANTIS. I also like that some members of the cast of DEGRASSI are in this film in minor roles. Considering that is a series about The Coming of age of high school students.
Robert Downey Jr, is great here in another performance to his repitoire and it's strange to see him play more of a solid professional and advesary sincehis usual performances are so loose, energetic and quirky. Here he represents the administration.
It is easy to see why many seasoned actors were drawn into this film. It's fun while trying to teach a little lesson itself. Though it borrows from many other films it creates a collage of those films to make it's own identity.
The story of a boy raised in boarding Schools who keeps getting kicked out and hashad a psychiatrist since adolesence. Is now forced to go to a public school where he gains popularity by beingthe school unofficial psychiatrist and motovational speaker tothe student body. While fighting the administrations increasingly restrictive rules.
There is more to it, but that is thebasic plot. The little details are what makes the movie work and noteworthy.
