The film is about Adam Sandler Taking Custody of A child meant for his roommate While the Roomate is out of town. He does this to impress his girlfriend and show he is mature. I backfires of course and he is stuck with the child and tries to raise him.
I know i am part of a certain minority of film fans who actually enjoy Adam Sandler films. This is the one i really enjoyed the most thoroughly seeing it in the theater. the film is supposed to be about a Guy who still acts like a kid learning to become a adult by taking care of a actual kid. It sounds simple it is simple and it works. This is pure entertainment through and through.
I has a huge Well known cast. Including Adam Sandler's friends who usually co-star in his films.
This film zips along fast while being cute and including the juvenile humor that sandler is known for including his being a sweet guy at heart with a hair trigger temper. It's a personea he plays well and one that i miss.
Like a modern day Jerry Lewis he knows what sells to his audience the type of character he plays to appeal to them. In movie after movie he plays a different version of essentially the same character. He gives the audience what they want
As over the years Mr. Sandler keeps making movies that more seem aimed at kids and family audiences more then the actual fans he has in a age group. Usially teens and young men. His screen personea has changed too as he is still funny he plays it more laid back and more of a wisecracker living the lap of luxury then the angry misunderstood everyman we are used to. Due to this change i also feel the quality of his film and material has dropped. This film is the first sign of the apocalypse of the change but here he manages to mix his old style with his upcoming new stlye and that is why i believe it is one of his last really good films YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN being his last.
This film rightfuly mixes the upsurd, Stupid and the funny. The film sin't too long so that it never wears out it's welcome.
The main Disappointment with this film is considering the talent involved i wish it hadbeen a little more hilarious. Looking back upon the film it is almost the end of a era with Adam Sandler. it would be one ofthe last times i would really enjoy one of his films in a theater. I didn't even pay to see it as i worke at a movie theater at the time and day in and day out saw the trailer play on the Tv's we had set up around the theater. So i was determined to see it opening weekend. Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider actually came to the theater that weekend to see the audiences reaction after the film had begun.
One of thethings i admire about Mr. Sandleris thefact that heoften casts his friends in his films usually in supporting roles. I like he doesn't forget them though even as he getsolder their roles get smaller and smaller as he realizes if they haven't made it on their own yet. he can only do so much.
I don't have too much to say about the film as there is no real depth that doesn't feel manufactured, but the film is entertaining and one that can be watched more then once.
A Good Rental. Add to the film library if it is under $9.95

Yeah, I consider this the last good "Adam Sandler" movie (as opposed to good movies he was in like Punch Drunk Love or Reign Over Me). It at times doesn't totally work, but has it's heart in the right place. It's weird seeing Jon Stewart in one of his few acting roles. I think the gay guys don't fit in to the movie, and the movie doesn't know whether it wants them to be a joke or wants us all to accept gay people. Steve Buscemi gets a fun little cameo, better than his appearance in Billy Madison.
ReplyDeleteThere's good observational humor, especially the thing about McDonald's changing their breakfast hours, which wouldn't be out of place in a Seinfeld episode. And I give credit to a movie that can make a line like "I wipe my own ass!" seem touching.
This movie is frequently quoted among high school students and has been for years. Especially the "Scuba Sam" bit and the thing with "hippopotamus".
While Happy Gilmore may be the best pure zany Sandler movie, Big Daddy is really not a bad film for what it is, and a nice rental for father's day.
