In this horror-comedy, at a New Year's Eve party, Nico, a naive twenty year old, sets out ready to lose his virginity at all costs that same night. In the middle of the party, his gaze crosses Medea, a cunning and attractive mature woman.
Now this film is an oddity. As it is small scale and the only location is an apartment. A rather dirty one but it feels like we travel a great distance. Which might be because the story is so fanciful and full of conflict that it feels more grand.
The film is impressive for what it achieves with such a limited budget of $60,000. Especially when it comes to special effects. As the film progresses though things seem strange we understand why the character stays not only lust driving him but a certain kind of fantasy that seems like a sure thing. Which he pays for thoroughly.
The beginning of the film tries to set up the rest of the film even though it involves a video presentation that is not needed and never comes back again.
As with each conversation or action things get more and more strange to outlandish. You also begin to notice that for most of the movie. What takes place is a three way conversation between the main character, the seductress and her boyfriend outside trying to break in. Only in the third act of the movie does any real action begin. It is also where the film starts being over the top gross and graphic. Before the film was more dirty and a little nasty. In act three while not as graphic as You might expect. It is if you have a light stomach because it does get graphic and has a lot of bodily fluids out and about.
The ending is also quizzical as it seems to present a certain madness that matches the film, but doesn’t match the character and makes no sense. Sometimes the film feels more like an endurance test when it comes to the grosser aspects even the hygiene of everyone.
The film isn’t bad and recommends for the horror aficionado, but it does feel like it was more made to push the envelope a bit and is more humorous. As in the end the film carries a more b-movie feel a love all else. More made for exploration but doesn’t offer any. Instead it offers more an occult story. That could have sent the film in many different and stronger directions.
Despite it all this feels like a first film filled with promise and passion that keeps us interested in their future projects. As it feels like a film of ideas and determination like the original EVIL DEAD
