Broke, job hopping, indie musician, Izzy has just discovered that her ex-boyfriend- her soulmate!- got engaged to her ex-best friend, and their party happens to be tonight. Enraged and desperate, Izzy embarks on a quest to charge across Los Angeles and break that up in order to fulfill what she believes to be her destiny - before it's too late.
This film reminds one of a 1990’s indie comedy that would be noteworthy at Sundance they relied on quirk more than anything else. It's offers plenty of recognizable actors in small supporting roles that end up enriching the movie offering sage wisdom Or helping to shape the situations. As the film is lacking in plot already until they come along. As they are more the battery for the film. Other then the star who shines and is charismatic.
As these films usually have a first time star in the leading role. That allows them to show their versatility and charm. Which Mackenzie Davis does though certainly not her first starring role and you can see why throughout the film. In the many different types of scenes ,and emotions as well as genres she has to portray.
The film tries to fill in the inertia with comedic philosophy that coincides with the film’s themes. As this is a California centric movie that could be set many places but seems to attach itself to a kind of culture.
As the film goes along we get to know the main character of Izzy and are informed of why she is the way she is bit by bit, by the people in her life and the strange situations she finds herself in.
The film also has an indie band heavy soundtrack.
The problem is towards the end when we meet the man who she is doing this all for. The dream ex who got away. He is kind of disappointing and you are feel that she Wendy through all this for him. Especially the more we get to know him he becomes more unimpressive.
In a way she gets what she wants but comes up with the same realization the audience does to a degree. Maybe this is what she thought she wanted but it doesn’t feel right.
Making all that came before it feel like much ado about nothing. As it comes to not truly mean anything or stick around. So it was more just about the journey.
The tone of the film is all over the place artistic one minute. Comedic the next, then dramatic all of a sudden.
The main character is unlike able at first if into because other characters seem to dislike her so that towards the end confronting others who she says she treated well and the other one apologizes seems to make no sense.
What happens if not pursued. Not to mention no explanation For her about face decisions especially when it sounds like it wasn’t a great relationship then all Of a sudden walks away for no real reason.
One of the parts of the movie that does manage to stick is when she confronts her sister who she once had a band with. Their scenes together are strong and gives the film and character more of a spine to stand on
