After stopping off at Starbase Yorktown, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by an unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves fighting against a ruthless enemy with a well-earned hatred of the Federation and everything it stands for. Only a rebellious alien warrior can help them reunite and leave the planet to stop this deadly menace from beginning a possible galactic war.
To a certain degree films are meant and made to attract and audience seduce you to follow it and pay attention because you want to. They are even erotic to a point as an appeal for you and just naturally being that way
So that it feels almost like a relationship the first date (film) was great and interesting and got you ready and prepared for the next one and more. The second date felt familiar yet still fun. As you have been introduced but are still getting to know one another and gaining a little more depth. The third date has a lot to LOVE up to by still should be a slam dunk and it ends up just ok par for the course but here is where you wonder and worry what the rest of the dates are going to be like this was underwhelming and do you want to continue in this relationship?
To be more specific, It goes such as on the first date (film) things are promising. Time flies by getting to know each other. That by the end you wonder where the time went. As you are having fun and feel relaxed as certain things are explored and relieved.
The second date (film) you are more relaxed as now you have kind of a shared history. Bough. Ow you seek to dig deeper. It's ok if it stays the course but if the stakes are raised you are more impressed. You come more to an understanding as whether this is lining each other and. Ore of a friendship or could this be something more. This might seem average to others but if you feel something or find a connection more than others you are hooked
By the third film (date) usually this is the make it or break it moments. If you have made it this far you are either lucky or have truly made a mark. Some find this is the point of completion and a satisfaction. Some find they want more past this point. As the arc has been completed. You know where you are going from here.
This film never quite reaches the heights of the first two films. Which felt grand and important as they shaped a new universe and chapter for the series and films. The first one introduced us and kind of was a prequel history. While changing the universe. As well as the sequel introducing a familiar old foe under a new disguise. That while repeating things we already knew again was a tale of the last that we have always heard and never really saw. That allowed the new film to still be Exocet g and feel Important.
Unfortunately, while this film Is fun it also feels more like an episode of a regular series. Rather than something that is noteworthy for the big screen. Especially when it seems most non important no name cast members are guest stars or disposable. Whose deaths are here more to show the dangers of what could happen and the end result of a weapon used. Plus gives some nice special effects a showcase.
While it stays fun it doesn't really open any new happens or present is with something new. While it is an adventure. It feels like a regular one that doesn't present any real stakes. It threatens but never quite bites.
While the film isn't stupid it feels rather simple to a degree. Like a dumbed down science fiction action film. That fits into the summer movie extravaganza, but leaves a lot to be desired as far as being a chapter in the series. Which is a shame considering cast member Simon Pegg known for his sense of humor and co-writing many genre, comedic films is one of the co-writers. Yet brings nothing. New to the table.
For a film that is supposed to involve the new adventures of this core team and coast. Everything feels very familiar Even for the audience. Which is where the problem lies. As in the first two films we mainly knew the stories, but the films managed to make them feel fresh and new. Even surprising at some points, but here we get a new original story and it feels like we have already seen it. It feels stale more than anything.
Not that JJ Abrams director of the first two films. As well as a few other features is a legendary director or visual stylist, but his films. Had something certain flourishes that this film seems to lack. Even though this is Justin Lin's first time directing the series. He is known for being more of a visual stylist which comes in handy for a few scenes and sequences. Though strangely this film feels bare of style compared to the films that came before it. This film seems to try to be maybe a little more hip and it feels out of place. Not necessarily as natural as it should.
The cast does well as this is the last film of Anton Yelchin who plays Checkov.
Though it seems the newcomers to the series with Idris Elba playing a villain and Sofia Boutella playing a new ally. Both under heavy make-up. Look ridiculous and their performers get lost under the special effects make-up so that the looks they have seem to act for them.
The grand finale of the film makes it certainly a movie that was clearly intended to be seen on the big screen. There are other scenes throughout that are supposed to be action set pieces though feel just means to an end something spectacular to keep the story going but clearly not truly needed. Though it keeps the film moving along and entertaining.
With this film you pretty much know what you are going to get. So it gives the film a lack of suspense and excitement. Though you know it will look awesome. So it feels like going on a roller coaster you have ridden plenty of times before. So while you have the excitement and joy of riding it again. Once you are experiencing it. It's not as much fun as the tie a before and you slowly realize you are over it. Though the film tries to add some new attractions it the ride it's nice. But it still feels familiar.
So while the film tries to offer thrills. The problem is that the film is so predictable you never have the necessary worry. You just sit there and wait for things to happen.
One of the reasons this is so disappointing is that this is the first film of this new rebooted series that has an original adventure.
The first film was It’s reinvention so that was spectacle the second was a familiar villain and tale albeit in a different perspective to go along with the rejiggered universe and history of the characters. So this one was it's first original and independent and It’s ok but rather pedestrian.
For a series and film full of special effects that are meant to impress and be a big production and show it feels small.
