OSCAR NOMINATIONS 2016: Odds & Ends
The following is just an opinion. As I am not a member of the academy, nor in any voting capacity. This is based off of the movies i have seen this year. Now I haven’t seen all the nominated movies. So part of this is based on buzz also.
SURPRISE OMISSIONS
BEST SCORE
IT FOLLOWS
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
I am surprised Ennio Morricone got the nomination for THE HATEFUL EIGHT considering he has admitted that most of it is discarded scores for other films he has done. Like THE THING. I am not as surprised with John Williams for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKWENS as it seems mandatory that he always be nominated and even though he re-used the main theme and some would say that it is in the spirit of the film reusing plot and story elements of the original trilogy.

Everyone knew The Big Short would be nominated for Best Picture. No Surprise. Hope to see it this weekend.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to your "Movies watched in (insert month)" list?
I bet if Straight Outta Compton had come out later in the year, it would have gotten more nominations. I think a prime reason Mad Max had such staying power in voters' minds is the perceived feminism of it. That's also how Silence of the Lambs ended up taking Best Picture, though it had been released in February. It was seen as a feminist movie. Compton on the other hand took some criticism for a bit of misogyny and not being critical enough of Dre. But there's only so much you can cover in one film.
ReplyDeleteMichael B. Jordan deserved a nom for Fruitvale Station. Haven't seen Creed yet, but I know he's got a nomination in his future soon.
I'd also throw in Love and Mercy for sound design. The sound collages in that movie were amazing.
@Christopher I will be doing it next month putting up both december and january, As i haven't had the time to make and put out the list with all things going on around me.
ReplyDelete@Jon i agree about him deserving a nomination for FRUITVALE STATION. His performance in CREED was good but he was stringer and had more to play with in FRUITVALE STATION.
