A suburban teenager comes of age under the destructive guidance of his best friend, an aimless college dropout.
At first this film feels like a familiar coming of age story but as it goes along you start to notice the differences and by the end while it’s Own story. It does make it’s Differences known In it’s set up it almost seems like it will be a suburban teenage crime caper but then eases off to let the coming of age story Take center stage as well as drop hints to the more illegal Stuff. Though really even the coming of age stuff takes a backseat to the scenes of the unofficial star of the film.
One of the big reasons to watch this film is comedian Pete Davidson. It doesn’t seem like he is doing much acting but you can see why his character is followed by the younger character he is charismatic. Even if he is pretty much a screw up that even the to her character recognizes this but still idolizes him.
This is pretty much his film, As he isn’t the protagonist but he is the character who is constantly in the film And makes the most impact. You can see why he’s like A big kid who has access to drugs, alcohol a car and his own place. We also see it affects the whole family as the kids sister is his ex and has moved on to a more grown up relationship but still messes around with him more as a vacation away from the pressures of her life. Nostalgic for her youth and easier times.
The scene where Jon Cryer who has had a mind of quiet anger and jealously of the character is transcendent as a mind of taking back his power but also says a lot with so little and the only time his character lets loose in his own container way.
Throughout the film but really towards the second half of the film. The film Features situations that we think we know how they will turn out and actually Don’t they keep you on your toes. This film isn’t as sentimental as it seems. It presents plenty of hard truths with no answers and character who don’t Necessarily learn anything or get any better.
Even Sydney Sweeney who has a smalls uplifting role here makes her mark as Davidson’s girlfriend who is cool and sexy and proves to be temptation but also allows her character to be vindictive when hurt and with revenge on her mind.
The film isn’t anything new but it is entertaining and you can see an attempt to try and be a bit more Realistic in it’s Depictions at times while still being humorous.
As essentially it is about growing up and taking responsibility for your actions and those around you.
I can understand the ending and why they needed to make it more plain, but it does feel like a disappointment.
